Great Expectations In Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations," an orphaned boy, by the name of Philip Pirrip, known as Pip, lives his life and find out the many attributes life has to it. He finds how the society treats the different classes and how money makes all the difference in the world of a High class/Low class society. Pip grows up in a low class village and soon learns about the high class lifestyle as he visits a wealthy woman, Miss Havisham. From this, he is introduced to the effect money can have on a person. He learns that with money, a person can have almost anything. Pip, being in the presence of wealthy people, is influenced and starts acting with more stature and class than his family. He feels embarrassed when his brother-in-law Joe, meets with Miss. Havisham of the richer and "better" society/class. Pip gains wealth from a secret benefactor and gets moved to London, where all have money and are high class. He lives and grows up in this new and different society, learning how to fit in and use money not as a precious commodity ( like he was accustomed to in his previous, low class lifestyle) but as it were a regular, common thing that if not used quickly, would soon be out-dated. He goes through his teens like this and finds great differences in his new lifestyle and his old. Pip gains much with his new found wealth. He gets new clothes; which help him fit into his new lifestyle. Also, he makes new friends and interacts with the higher class; Something which was looked down upon and almost outlawed when he was four. After his sisters death, Pip visits his village and his brother-in-law Joe to attend his sisters funeral. He feels remorse for his sister but also feels that it isn't his home anymore and feels uncomfortable. This is peculiar to Pip, considering a lifestyle that he lived with for years was now mysterious and not his way. He felt a loyalty to Joe and the help, Biddy. He feels as though they were part of him, and they were, and that he must return often to check up on them. Promising to keep close ties, he goes back to London and returns to his "real" life. Back in London, Pip's life goes on and becomes more complex and difficult with debts and love (A life totally different and more complex than the simple, happy life he left behind). His need of money and use grows as he matures into a young adult. He and his friend Herbert, both in the same boat - debt, looked for love and believe they have found it but haven't found it (At least this is the case with Pip as he believes he has found love with Estella). As Pip continues to receive money from his benefactor, who he believes is Miss. Havisham, he looks for love in Estella.
